2011 UUCW February 26th Canvass Event & Cabaret. The evening began with an hour of socializing and hors d’oeuvres. With plate in hand, we joined our table hosts to enjoy “The Sounds of Canvass” - a variety of musical and comedy performances by creative, talented (and brave!) church members under the direction of Julie Lange, Ruben Piirainen and Kristen L. Weber. Halfway through we took a break to complete pledge cards – an opportunity to show our love and support for this fabulous spiritual community. We had alot of fun (and a few of your favorite things as well)!

Notes from the Creator:
What better foundation to use to create this year’s Canvass Cabaret than Rodgers and Hammerstein’s timeless classic “The Sound of Music.” You recognized many of the songs, but what you might not have recognized were some of the names, places and cultural references… so here’s a quick description of the night:
Our story took place in the small country of Tolerez Domeniul (brook & field in Romanian). Our narrators for this evening were The Chervonets. Although their name sounds like a 50’s girl group, they are in fact named for a form of currency of the former Russian Empire. Juno Moneta, the country’s resident guru on pledging is named after the Roman Goddess of Good Counsel. It is also thought that our word money is derived from her name Moneta. The country’s spiritual leader is Mama Sophia. The name Sophia is Greek for wisdom and many other cultures worship or revere a ‘Sophia.’ And, of course, ‘Mama’ is included to signify her nurturing and sustaining nature.
